Bergen lies on the innermost bay of the Byfjord, which forms a natural harbor at this point. The cemetery with 1,061 individual graves and 24 dead in a common grave is located in the Bergen-Solheim municipal cemetery, east of Bergen, and was laid out by the Wehrmacht in 1940. Between 1954 and 1955, the Norwegian government buried German casualties from the Bergen area. Granite crosses with the names of the dead mark the graves. The cemetery was inaugurated on August 28, 1960. 1,085 fallen soldiers from the Second World War rest here.
