The German military cemetery in Aleppo, Syria, is located approx. 2.5 km north of the city center. Around 200 soldiers from the First World War are buried here. Access is via a steep staircase, behind the entrance gate there is a bilingual sign in Arabic and English indicating the opening hours. In 1997, the cemetery was found to be neglected and dilapidated. In 2004, the cemetery in Aleppo was restored by the then Honorary Consul from Germany. The costs were laid out by the honorary consul for the Volksbund and later reimbursed. The care of the cemetery was taken over by the Foreign Office in Berlin. However, the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V. continues to provide financial and advisory support for measures to restore and maintain the cemeteries in Syria.
