In 1989, several cemeteries were discovered here in the immediate vicinity of the Nazi concentration camp, containing victims of the Stalinist internment camp that existed from 1945 to 1950. The number of mostly nameless dead is estimated at around 24,000. They died of disease and starvation. The most famous victim is probably the actor Heinrich George. the cemetery was redesigned in 1993. There is no information about the number of dead from the period before 1945, but estimates range from 15,000 to 30,000 victims. The location of the graves of these victims is not known.
