Georgia - Country information

The war graves agreement between Georgia and Germany was signed on June 25, 1993 and came into force on February 5, 1995.

The domestic political situation initially prevented an inventory of the grave locations from being made. It was not until November 1996 that the Commission was able to start its work in this country. Since the Georgian government did not name an official point of contact for the Commission, the restoration of the still existing prisoner of war cemeteries was begun after agreement with the individual municipalities.

The Commission is aware of 41 POW cemeteries at 61 camp sites from archive documents, and 23 of these have already been completed. These sites have been restored and are subject to ongoing maintenance.

It cannot be ruled out that some cemeteries will be discovered as a result of information from the public.
