The cemetery, which was consecrated on July 28, 1962, is located on a hill, the Karberg, southeast of the isthmus between the Schlei, which is open to the Baltic Sea, and the inland water "Haddebyer Noor" opposite the town of Schleswig.
On an area of approx. 13,000 square meters, 1,124 war dead rest in five fields, including over 300 members of other nations and 274 men, women and children who lost their lives uninvolved in the fighting of the Second World War.
The war cemetery on the Karberg is ideally suited for prayer and contemplation due to its location in the landscape on the Schlei. The centerpiece is an irregularly shaped hall (10x10 m) with a ceiling pierced by bombs and shells on rock-like pillars.
