German and Hungarian war dead rest together in Budaörs. The war cemetery west of Budapest is the largest site for war dead from both countries.
Cemetery description
The Budaörs war cemetery is the largest site for German and Hungarian war dead in Hungary. It is located a few kilometers west of the capital Budapest. The information building, which also houses an exhibition about the cemetery, is only open when the caretakers are present. However, the war cemetery itself is accessible at all times.
Occupancy
Those who died in the Second World War rest in Budaörs, mainly from the area east of the Danube, from Komáron-Esztergom and Pest counties and from Budapest. To date, 16,630 dead have found their final resting place here. 2.400 war dead whose remains could no longer be recovered due to overbuilding, but whose names and dates are known, have been immortalized in a permanent metal name book.
History
in 2001, the dead of the Budapest-Kispest, Budapest X. District and Esztergom were transferred to Budaörs. The cemetery was inaugurated on October 19, 2002. in 2018, a further 198 German and 21 Hungarian soldiers were buried at the war cemetery. The soldiers were only recovered in 2018 by the reburial service of the German War Graves Commission, and some were subsequently identified in cooperation with the German Service in Berlin.
Special feature
At the same time as the cemetery was expanded, a peace park was created on the approximately six-hectare site. On October 24, 1998, the first 58 trees were planted in the Budaörs Peace Park. There are now 674 peace trees that have found a tree sponsor. A multilingual exhibition documents the suffering of people during the war with individual stories. The Volksbund has created further peace parks in La Cambe (France), Groß Nädlitz/(Nadolice Wielkie/Poland) and Sologubowka (Russia).
Opening hours
Due to the exposed location of the war cemetery, continuous opening of the information building - including at weekends and on public holidays - could only be guaranteed at an increased cost. For this reason, and to protect the exhibition materials and furnishings from theft and vandalism, the information building is only open when the care workers are present. However, the war cemetery itself is accessible at all times.
