Total Occupation: 50 fatalities

in 1993, there were 14 small graves in two sections at the Bestensee municipal cemetery, which were laid out and maintained by the former cemetery gardener on a voluntary basis, as there was no obligation for the municipalities to maintain and care for war graves in the former GDR. It was not until the end of 1993 that the Brandenburg municipalities were requested to record the war graves in lists of graves by December 31, 1994 in accordance with § 1 Para. 1 of the Graves Act. Although the war dead of the municipality of Bestensee were registered in the cemetery book at that time, neither the exact grave locations nor the number of dead in the individual graves can be determined from the records, as unfortunately there are no longer any contemporary witnesses who could remember the burial of the fallen. It is assumed that the war dead were initially buried in Section 1. When there was no longer enough space in this part of the cemetery, a second collective grave was created in Section 4. It is not possible to draw any conclusions about the actual number of people buried there due to the size of the plots. It is also not possible to determine with certainty whether these are individual graves or mass graves. In 2002, the war graves were redesigned and two closed cemeteries were created. After another review and correction of the list of names of the war dead, it was possible to mark the names of the fallen in November 2013. The war graves of the municipality of Bestensee are located in the North Cemetery at Hauptstraße 88, opposite the Koch nursery. Source: Municipality of Bestensee, Eichhornstraße 4 - 5, 15741 Bestensee
