The municipal cemetery in Schmargendorf was established in the middle of the 19th century when the adjacent Protestant village churchyard Alt Schmargendorf in today's Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district of Berlin was no longer sufficient. Since 1914, the cemetery has been managed by the municipal authorities. The cemetery was extended until the Second World War, with a further extension towards Warnemünder Straße in the 1960s. The cemetery contains the graves of various personalities, including - Melli Beese (13.9.1886-21.12.1925), aviation pioneer and first German female pilot (honorary grave) - Franz Cornelsen (22.7.1908-31.10.1989) and Hildegard Cornelsen (21.11.1905-28.9.1981), founded the Cornelsen publishing house together in 1946 - Max Pechstein (31.12.1881-29.6.1955), important expressionist painter, who also dealt with his participation in the First World War in his art (grave of honor) - Richard Scheibe (19.4.1879-6.10.1964), sculptor and medallist (grave of honor): In addition to memorials to the First World War and the memorial to Friedrich Ebert in Frankfurt, he also created the memorial to the victims of 20 July 1944 in the Bendlerblock. The 1.6-hectare cemetery is also home to victims of the First and Second World Wars. (Martin Bayer, 08.04.2020)
