St. John's Church was built according to plans by Carl Friedrich Schinkel on Moabit Hill (popularly known as "Karnickelberg") as one of his four suburban churches (Elisabethkirche, Nazarethkirche, Johanniskirche, Paulskirche) and was consecrated on St. John's Day, June 24, 1835 as Moabit's first church. At that time, Moabit had 700 inhabitants - by 1860 there were already 6,543. Moabit was incorporated into Berlin on January 1, 1861. in 1885, around 35,000 people lived in Moabit, twenty years later around 210,000 people. On November 23, 1943, the nave burned down completely after an air raid. The church was rebuilt between 1950 and 1957. In the cemetery behind the church there is a collective grave of 34 m² with victims of the Second World War. (Martin Bayer, 24.06.2020)
