Total Occupation: 55 fatalities

The German military cemetery in Baghdad is the central site in Iraq. Here rest 45 war dead from the First World War and 10 war dead from the Second World War. Seven of the German war dead from the First World War were transferred from the civilian cemetery in Basra to Baghdad in 1953. The cemetery was repaired by the Volksbund in 1973. in 1989, restoration work was also carried out with funds from the Volksbund. During the fighting in the Second Iraq War, the cemetery in Baghdad was damaged. in 2004, the urgently needed repair work was carried out with the financial support of the Volksbund. As the Volksbund cannot be active in Iraq itself, the German mission abroad takes care of the condition of the war cemetery. Photos: German Embassy Baghdad 2020
