German prisoners of war who died were mostly buried in separate cemeteries near the camps. There are 6,600 war dead in 57 locations, who are afforded the same protection as the dead in the military cemeteries. However, according to Article 2 of the War Graves Agreement with France of July 19, 1966, the preservation of these graves is the responsibility of the French government. In coordination with the French burial service and the local authorities, the Volksbund also looks after these graves.
