The Allentsteig military cemetery with 3,911 war dead of the Second World War, inaugurated on 13 September 1981, is located on the edge of a military training area about 500 meters from the village of Allentsteig/Bez. Zwettl on the road leading east to Merkenbrechts. Almost 1,000 natural stone crosses made of Waldviertel granite mark the graves of the fallen who rest here. The names and dates of two war dead are inscribed on the front and back of each cross. An eight-metre-high metal cross rises up in the middle of the four burial plots of the approximately 12,600 square metre cemetery, visible from afar. A small entrance building with a roof made of wooden shingles offers visitors protection from the weather. The cemetery was handed over to the care of the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior on 1 January 2011.
