The first fallen were buried in Alkischken at the beginning of 1915. The majority of the dead buried in the cemetery fell during the battles for the town of Schaulen (Siauliai) in June 1915. By the end of the First World War, around 440 German and 190 Russian soldiers were buried in the cemetery. The 4 meter high obelisk made of field stones, the wall built of boulders and 296 concrete grave crosses have been preserved from the original design. Between 1995 and 1997, the Volksbund worked with youth groups on the war cemetery. The young people cleaned up the area and re-erected the grave crosses. The Alkischken cemetery is now in the care of the administration of the Naujoji Akmene district.
