Due to the lack of a war graves agreement with Syria, which forms the legal basis for our activities in other countries, the Commission is unable to take care of war graves and war grave sites in Syria. This task has been taken on by the Foreign Office in Bonn and the local diplomatic mission. However, the Commission provides financial and advisory support for the restoration and maintenance of the cemeteries.
In Syria, war graves can be found in
Aleppo (German military cemetery, with 216 fallen soldiers of World War I), Damascus (11 fallen soldiers of World War I, Protestant cemetery of the Arab Evangelical community), Duman (27 fallen soldiers of World War I) and Hama (2 fallen soldiers of World War I).
