Losses
In the former Yugoslavia, military cemeteries had been set up for 14,000 fallen soldiers of World War I by 1939. For the territory of present-day Serbia, the number of dead of World War I has not yet been evaluated. Nevertheless, in 1988, plaques with the names of 974 German soldiers who fell in Belgrade during the Second World War were attached to the “Mackensen Monument” from the First World War in the Belgrade cemetery of Banovo Brdo. In the former Yugoslavia, 58,600 deaths in almost 3,400 locations are registered for the Second World War. More than 15,400 of these deaths occurred in what is now Serbia, in 719 locations.
In 2007, the remains of soldiers were recovered in Podgorica during road construction work and transferred to the German military cemetery in Split, Croatia.
Legal basis for the maintenance of war graves in Serbia
A war graves agreement has been negotiated but not yet signed. This was announced at a press conference at the Federal Chancellery on February 27, 2018. It is currently still in the coordination phase with the relevant institutions.
