Portugal - Country information

Portugal did not take part in the Second World War. On the four small German sites, which are maintained by the German Embassy, the remains of washed-up sailors and crashed aircrew are interred, along with 41 fallen from both world wars.

Soldiers of the Bundeswehr, who were stationed at the German airbase in Beja, took on the small site in the cemetery in Aljezur. Today, the small German community of Aljezur tends the graves and commemorates the fallen together with the German marines from Lisbon on Remembrance Day.

In Moura, the city takes care of the graves.

German soldiers from the First and Second World Wars have found their final resting place in the following cemeteries:

Aljezur/Algarve (7 German fallen of World War II, municipal cemetery)

Angra do Heroismo/Terceira Island (17 German fallen of World War I, “Nossa Senhora da Conceicao” cemetery)
