In Macedonia, the official German Graves Registration Service expanded several cemeteries in the early 1930s, including those in Skopje and Prilep. Both sites were inaugurated on May 8-9, 1933. The Commission was then able to build another cemetery in Bitola for 3,500 soldiers, which was handed over to the public on October 25, 1936. In addition, there are indications of further smaller grave sites from the First World War that require restoration.
A war graves agreement with Macedonia was concluded in November 2012.
In 2005, Bundeswehr servicemen began restoring the military cemetery in Prilep, where 1,680 dead of the First World War and 53 dead of the Second World War are buried. The cemetery is being expanded into a central collective burial place for the fallen of the Second World War. The restoration of the cemetery was concluded with a memorial service on August 29, 2009.
The graves in Skopje were built over after the Second World War; the dead buried there can no longer be recovered.
In addition, around 1,800 war dead from the Second World War are buried in 75 locations. These dead are to be recovered and buried in Prilep in the next few years.
