Chile - Country information

On March 14, 1915, during World War I, the German cruiser SMS Dresden, after an adventurous odyssey and pursued by the English cruisers Kent, Glasgow and Orama, surrendered in Cumberland Bay on the island of Mas a Tierra under Chilean sovereignty. Nevertheless, the English opened fire and the Dresden caught fire. Finally, the commander of the Dresden ordered the ship to be blown up after most of the crew, including the ship's dog and parrot, were able to escape to Robinson Crusoe Island. The site in Cumberland Bay is marked today with two yellow buoys and has been declared a national monument by the Chilean government.
